You can't prove it, so why are you sure God exists?

🔥A child asks: “Show me certain proof and I'll believe.”

🛡️The answer: To be honest from the start, there is no scientific proof of God in the sense of repeated measurement in a laboratory. The Catholic Church does not claim that God has been detected like a substance within nature. But “not proven by scientific experiment” and “not one reason to believe” are not the same statement. Historical events are judged from documents and testimony, another person's heart from words and actions over a long time; each kind of question needs the method that fits it.

The grounds Catholic faith offers are concrete. First, why does a world exist in which things come to be, pass away, and lean on one another? Second, why does nature have consistent laws, and why can human reason understand them? Third, what grounds are there for saying that human dignity, and the moral obligation not to do evil, are more than a matter of taste? Fourth, how is the earliest testimony to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus to be judged historically?

🥊The pushback: “Those grounds can be interpreted in other ways too, can't they?”

💡Answering again: That is right. Not one of them compels assent to God the way a mathematical formula does, and each has counterarguments. So a believer must not say, “it has been perfectly proven, and doubting it is irrational.” Still, the fact that counterarguments are possible is not the same as saying there are no grounds. We can honestly compare which account, that God exists or that God does not, better explains the facts about the world, human beings, and Jesus. Faith is a free response of trust in God after examining as far as reason can verify; it is not the point where thinking stops.
