Isn't God a comforting fantasy made up by anxious people?

🛡️The answer: There may well be people who turn to God because they fear death. But that alone leads to no conclusion that God and heaven are stories people made up.

Christianity does not say only comfortable things. It demands that you admit your own wrongs, love your enemies, share with the weak, and at times accept a loss. The first Christians did not spread the faith to make themselves safe and comfortable; they testified to the resurrection of Jesus while accepting disadvantage and persecution. The fact that they sacrificed does not by itself prove the resurrection true, but it does show that “a story made up just to feel better” is not an adequate explanation. In the end the testimony about Jesus and the other reasons for believing in God have to be examined on their own.

🎨An analogy — a reassuring diagnosis and a rumor

A doctor's accurate diagnosis can put your mind at rest, and a baseless rumor can also reassure you for a while. Being comforting alone settles nothing about whether something is true or false. This analogy is not evidence that God exists; it shows that the psychology behind coming to believe and the truth of the belief have to be examined separately.
