Prayer and the spiritual life · Question 10
Can being angry at God and arguing with him really be called prayer?

The question: “Can I argue with God — ‘Why did you do this?’ — or cry in front of him?”
The Church's answer: The Psalms are full not only of praise but of lament, fear, anger, and questions. Jesus himself prayed a psalm of lament on the cross. You do not have to show God only pretty words. As long as it is not used to justify a decision to harm someone else, saying honestly that your heart hurts and asking for help does not break the relationship — it is prayer that stays inside it.
If they press further: “What if I'm so angry that I might hurt someone, or myself?” — Do not try to hold out alone with prayer. Get away from anything dangerous, tell a trusted adult immediately, and get help from your local emergency number or a crisis support service.
In one sentence: “You can tell God your tears and your anger and your questions honestly. Bring a true heart, the way the Psalms do — and when there is danger, ask people for help immediately too.”
